Italian Modern-Day Slavery
Due to the Covid-19 crisis many people have now experienced living through a quarantine, and many have referred to this as a dystopian reality. Without undermining the severity of the Covid crisis I believe it is important to put things into perspective. Being at home in a relatively safe environment isn’t exactly the plot of a dystopian movie. To me, what seems to resemble that scenario the most, is the situation of many refugees who are approaching the Italian shores and the undocumented immigrants who are working and living in Italy; which is part of the self-proclaimed ‘human rights heaven’, namely, the EU. When hearing and reading about what is happening to these migrants and refugees I often feel like the situation is not described for what it actually is: modern day slavery. In this case I focus on the Italian government’s actions the most because it is the country which is most directly involved in such situations; however the whole EU has a responsibility in this.
